Ahoy there all,
I’m soon to be a proud new MacGregor 26M owner based in the South of England. Looking forward to crossing paths with some of you out on the water soon!
I’m currently sourcing for a new mainsail and sprayhood. I have quotes from ADM/Sanders Sails and CJ Marine/Advanced Covers, but Blue Water Yachts (USA) is significantly cheaper—even including their expensive shipping.
Does anyone have experience with the "hidden" costs of ordering from BWY? I'm specifically concerned about the total VAT and handling fees when the gear hits the UK. Is it still a bargain once it clears customs?
Any referrals to other sail/sprayhood makers locally would also be highly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Steve

Hi Steven
You will have to pay duty on the price of the sail plus the shipping then 20% Vat on that amount
The duty rate is based on the Commodity Code for the Sail and the country of origin - so it might not be the US because Bluewater might be having it made in China.
Your best bet is to buy from Uk sail loft .
Hope this helps
Will try US Sail Loft, thanks John.
Did some research on UK Duty and found this, which seems to exempt UK Duty for sails used on yachts.......https://www.gov.uk/guidance/check-if-you-can-pay-less-duty-if-your-goods-are-imported-into-end-use#shipwork-goods . Also this useful calculator for UK Duty......https://www.trade-tariff.service.gov.uk/commodities/6306300000?day=24&month=4&request id=1524769e-b6b2-4b2b-9f27-3bd01806700b&year=2026&country=US# If not then its 12% on price+shipping, then VAT on price+shipping.
Hi Steven, have a word with Kemp Sails of Gosport/Wareham , I know that they have done sails for a couple of X's in the past & also do the right size spinnaker symmetrical /semi symmetrical too. If you still have the original sail then they could copy it. They are very reasonable on cost. Very helpful staff.
Thanks Andrew, Roger Wilco
