Hello all,
Before I put the mast back up after my excursion to the Broads for the Big Mac I thought I'd investigate what needs fixing next time it's down.
There's a bit of fraying on where the shroud meets the stay adjuster (that I want to upgrade to turnbuckles).
BWY have the official set here https://shop.bwyachts.com/product-p/3118-1m0.htm but I wondered if anyone could help me out with the specs that I could give to a UK rigger to get these made in the UK.
Also, are thre any other things to look out for?
TIA,
Nick

I would get your local chandlers to make up the rigging. It will be a lot cheaper. For your turnbuckles have a look at Westfield fastener's on the internet it's where I get a lot of my hardware from. I upgraded all my rigging to 4 mm & a 5 mm forestay which was all done by our local chandlers.
I agree with Andrew. The rigging is all standard stuff so your local marina rigger should be able to help. He should be able to visit you in advance, see at first hand what needs to be done and offer you a first hand quote.
If your marina doesn't employ a rigger it will have contact with one.
Good Luck with this and I hope you enjoyed the Big Mac

Thanks for the comments. I went to our on-site rigger who quoted me over £700 (fitted).
He's been reasonable on other things so this is surprising.

Yes , that is a bit steep. Do you need to replace all your rigging or maybe just forestay plus or minus the long shrouds. It's wise every 10 years but do you have any history? The upgrade to 5mm forestay is good and ask for it to be suaged ends rather than the standard macgregor loop and eye. You don't really need a rigger to fit since the Mac is so easy to fit and you can adjust tensions...no point in an expert since you take mast down and up.
I believe Jimmy Green is a rigging service on line if you just quote the lengths needed , or they may have standard for Mac M. There has been a forum on this before so good to do a search.

Just seen that Simon Armitage previously recommended a rigger based at Heybridge on the Blackwater...not far from you Nick.
If replacing chain plates with turnbuckles, check if the length is equivalent. If not, then you just need to adjust the spec for the new shrouds to account for the difference.

Good point Rick it depends on the turnbuckle. I managed to change on Aranah without any adjustment.
Hi Nick, I would get your turnbuckles from Westfield fastener's. Adjust the turnbuckles to the halfway setting then measure the difference on the old cable and take to your local chandlers to make up a new cable or if the cable's are ok then just renew the fitting. Personally I would replace all the rigging so you can have peace of mind. I would also suggest a tension gauge. Marine scene have a special offer on at the moment.
