BIG MAC 2024 - WEDNESDAY 24TH JULY TO WEDNESDAY 31ST JULY

The MOA committee has agreed on the Norfolk Broads as our destination for the Big Mac 24. We feel it can offer something for everyone and is a destination where the Association goal of convivial cruising can be achieved with opportunities for all levels of experience. We see the annual Big Mac as the best way to get a good turn out of Macs, and other trailer sailors, to share in the exploration of new cruising areas and build new associations and friendships.

If there is anyone within the Association who has good knowledge of the Broads and would like to take the lead in the planning or is willing to assist the Committee in planning a successful week, please let us know as soon as possible. You can put your hand up on this thread, or email any committee member (see here for the committee contacts).

As plans develop we will publish details on this thread.

In the meantime, expressions of interest are encouraged and will help build momentum towards a wonderful week in July next year.

I, for one, have it penned in and I'm sure Nicola will join me on this trip.

ALSO - although the Big Mac is the main event, we encourage members to advertise their own sailing plans in order to create 'mini-macs' at other times of the year. Within the 'On the Water' forum area there is a 'Member's Arrangements' section in which skippers can advertise their plans.

Hello all, we're hoping to get there, either with or without Breckon.

Would it be possible to chat on the phone to someone "in the know" to help me see what I might be able to manage for the weekend. I've been flattened with other things and only now getting round the reality of this on the horizon?

TIA, Nick

Jill and Rod (Wassall) and I

Jill and Rod (Wassall) and I will turn up on Friday at Reedham (staying locally) ready for any crewing Saturday onwards. Also Stephen Hinde rang this week, he might come and visit us at some point (he doesn't have his boat any more). He mentioned Wroxham Week, monster regatta presumably at Wroxham with lots of vintage boats as well 21-28 July. He mentioned the Green Book - the Norfolk and Suffolk Boating Association Handbook for Sailing and Cruising the Broads which is useful he says and may be available at Brooms Boatyard at Brundall if anyone may or may not have that.

Thanks Liz , it sounds like

Thanks Liz , it sounds like Friday at Reedham should be a date for a restaurant booking or at least a gathering point. Rick has done a bit of research on that. We were also looking at booking somewhere for food on Oughton Broad at the weekend.

Yes! Maybe Oulton as well.

Yes! Maybe Oulton as well. Rod and Jill will probably leave on Monday. When, where, if might Miriam and Jonathan join?

A pub meal at Reedham is a definite possibility. There's two pubs, the Ship and Lord Nelson. From a quick scan of info on Google maps, it looks like the former is prettier, but the latter has a more varied menu. Or if all else fails there's a chippie!

Hi Liz, unfortunately we have

Hi Liz, unfortunately we have a nephews wedding celebrations to attend in the north Lakes Thursday and Friday so we have decided its impractical for us to join in, much to my chagrin. I'll be following proceedings as we are planning to replicate your visit in September.

Jonathan

Hello all, looking forward to

Hello all, looking forward to next week (this week, I suppose) and wondered if we have any idea of how much we'll be eating out (and whether we should be booking things). I need to know how much onboard catering I'll need to pack.

TIA

Obviously it's up to people

Obviously it's up to people to decide themselves but I imagine we might eat out on Wednesday, Friday, Sunday and Tuesday but options for the other nights aswell , unless you decide to wild moor any of those nights. I heard that it's quite nice to do that but of course it's less social and you might need something called a mud weight.

Roly

Thanks. I'm planning to be

Thanks. I'm planning to be firmly attached to shore when I bed down!

Unfortunately I have just heard that both Thorsten Roser and Steve McFarlane have had to pull out of this event due to personal family circumstances, although if things improve Thor and his wife hope to meet up somewhere . Ah well .🥲

Hi Roly

Hi Roly

if you let us know what time you hope to arrive Reedham on Friday (whoever is left!) we could be there ready to 'help' (and bag a berth for Rick and Glenys) - text me perhaps on Friday?

Yes , certainly. We are

Yes , certainly. We are traveling up tomorrow and will likely stick to plan and collect Nicks boats as we pass Brundell on way to Reedham Friday. I could do with someone arranging meeting/ eating place in Reedham where we might also be joined by Mark and Julia Sexton and Rhor Roser and wife ? family. So potentially 13 plus for dinner. I'm busy prepping for departure.

13 😯 - well, we have plenty of people if not the boats!

I've made some phone calls, and that's too many for the Lord Nelson, they don't have enough free seats now. The Ship has a very limited menu, looks like burger & pizza.

However, the inn at Reedham Ferry, about a mile upstream from Reedham quay, can accommodate us. There are moorings there. They will want pre-orders and are going to email me a menu, so I'll post that here when I get it.

I don't know if they will also want deposits, I'll let you know.

Nick and Monica planning to

Nick and Monica planning to motor up in Breckon, provided we can get to Brundall and in the water in time.

Does anyone here have an estimate of motoring time from Brundall Marina to Reedham Ferry?

My navionics says just over 5NM, but is estimating 5.5 hrs. Can that be right?

*** ignore this, nav was set up for sail only!
*** Changing to motor and it's a little over an hour.
*** Even I should be able to get us there in good

*** time for pre-dinner drinks

Hi Nick

Hi Nick

There are several journey-time charts online, e.g. this one (scroll down the page). It gives Brundall to Reedham as 2 hrs - speed limit is 5 mph. I think the chart times are a bit pessimistic, so probably a bit less if you don't slow down at all.

Just to let you know that

Just to let you know that Maximus is all tucked up in Brundall Bay Marina after an uneventful drive up from Southampton , about 5 hours . I find it quite relaxing to cruise at 50 to 55mph and let the cars and lorries sort themselves out. The trailer parking place worked well , with tow car parked back at the marina. The slipway was a doddle ! Looking forward to meeting up with folk on Friday.

Excellent news Roly. What are your plans for tomorrow - are you still going to pootle up to Norwich, as was the plan for the fleet?

Hi Rick and all; we are

Hi Rick and all; we are unlikely to make it for Friday.
well done on getting your boat(s) there and have a great time! Best regards, Thor

So a month has already gone

So a month has already gone by, and we haven't yet thanked Rick and Roly for sorting out this trip and keeping us on the straight and narrow. Despite a few boats unable to make it a good time was had by all, even an actual MacGregor was amongst the fleet.

What are we going to do with the several hundred photos that were taken? Several options were discussed as I recall?

Quentin is now working on the next newsletter, I'm trying to remember some of the funny bits and Monica threatened to describe it all from her angle....

Thanks Liz ,  It was a nice

Thanks Liz , It was a nice time, wasn't it , and great that past ( no past it ! ) Mac owners could join in. I have sent my memories to Quentin since I wasn't officially the organiser , but I think the more reports the merrier...just to give Quentin the headache of editing it !

Regarding photos, I would quite like to see more real time posting of photos , maybe with short annotation. So, maybe we can start a section in the gallery bit . In fact I would encourage members to more often often use the facility to post photos , maybe with short reports of ways they have recently enjoyed boating . If that takes off maybe we can have a separate menu section for brief reports....Minimacs maybe !

Haha! ....I must admit it the

Haha! ....I must admit it the past I've struggled with uploading to gallery...but I just tried it and it was a cinch...posted some of my memory snaps in Mac2024 page. ....I've made the page open only to logged in members at present but that can be discussed.

Thanks for the pics Roly, I'm glad you didn't find it too hard in the end - I tried to make the process straightforward!

One point though, you didn't click on "Publish" to finish! I've just done that. A new gallery starts in an un-published state, so that people can't start viewing it while you're assembling and arranging the photos. But, as the guide text says, you must publish it when you've finished otherwise no-one can see it (apart from site administrators).
