Hi Andrew, there are visitor moorings at Ambleside (Watergate) that are administered from the lake wardens office at Ferry Nab. They are blue buoys with a floating strop that you hook up onto your boat. There are at least 3 of these just off the Watergate jetties - near the pub!. In fact one of those jetties is public and no one will pester you if you overnight on it. If you are staying on a visitor mooring you will need a tender and all boats that have an engine have to be registered - 25 pounds. Alternatively, if you are a risk taker, there are lots of un-occupied (for various reasons) buoys all over the lake that you could temporarily tie up to. There is one next to my boat that never gets used. And plenty of jetties too - Storrs Hall is a good spot for overnighting. Hope this helps.
