Best Gel Coat repair kit?

I guess you can tell I am starting to ramp up preparations, mostly in anticipation of some great sailing with my fellow Mac owners.

I have to do some repairs to scratches, scrapes, etc on my hull. I am looking for something that is already white, foolproof (as I am a fool), and effective.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

The first problem is getting

The first problem is getting a good colour match - eastcoast fibreglass offer a range of repair kits that allow you to match the colour closely if you have a reference colour to compare with - you can get RAL colour cards to compare colours.

Their kits are available on line and seem to me to be better than some of the better known names:

They are very helpful if you contact them - I used them to supply the materials when I built my centreboards.

If it's just white that you

If it's just white that you need, there is an off the shelf gelcoat filler by Plastic Padding. I've always found it matches the white of Mac hulls invisibly. It comes in a tube, but is plenty for the kind of quantities needed for this kind of job.

Matching the 26M blue hull is a different ball game, of course!

A response from Simon

A response from Simon Armitage, who's having trouble logging in from Melbourne!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi, Guys. Have just been in a WiFi hotspot and read David Claassen’s query about glass fibre repairs. If he has a white hull the colour is called MacGregor White and can be obtained from BWY but the colour only, not the resin as that is considered an explosive.

Have forgotten my password to the website so could you do me and David a favour and pass this onto him. They also stock the blue colour.

Thanks from a cold wet and windy Melbourne.

Simon
