Hi all
My headsail has finally given up the ghost and needs replacing (I think it is the original supplied with the boat), does any member have any advice on the best way to replace it, or if someone has a tidy second hand one they are looking to sell. Hope you Macers are all well and damb its good to be back on the water.

The original sail were made by Doyle. There are a number of U K sailmakers who could make you a new one.
Thanks David
I have asked a couple of sail lofts for quotes and any feedback that other Macers have would be helpful.
Thanks again

Hi the original Doyle sails weren't very good quality and had little UV protection. We had some new sails made up for us by N&J Mussett on Mersey Island in 2011 and they are much better quality and have held their shape properly - the Doyles stretched and didn't hold their shape well at all. Our Doyle jib just rotted on the forestay furler so the new sail is fitted with a blue UV protector along the luff so that it is completely protected when furled on the forestay and both is still holding up well as we don't take it off. The mainsail has not stretched and holds its shape well even when slap reefed. A much better set than the originals. I suspect any reasonable UK sailmaker can make a better sail than the Doyles which were a cheap fabric to keep teh price down. The new set was also less expensive than the Doyle replacements from Macgregor. The only issue we had was that the bolt rope had to be changed (done for free by sailmaker as teh metric rope was slightly smaller thanthe imperial rope used on the Doyle but once this was fixed the sails have been and still are faultless.
Hope this helps Mike C - Tarka 26M
Just remembered Jeckles Norfolk make sails.
I was quoted 780.00 last year by my usual sail repair loft NJO Sails ....Nicki took over the loft at Shamrock quay Southampton from Doyles .
That was for Genoa with if strip.

I'd be interested to see what you get quoted as ours are the original doyle ones as well

I think replacing our main sail might be first on the list as I need sliders incorporating so it can be hoisted from the cockpit (single handed setup). So would be interested in where you are getting prices (I've never bought a sail before)

My forsail is now rather preloved so i would be up for a new one sometime. I could go with my local loft or others depending on price....need to be sure if it's for a jib or Genoa. I have mainly used the Genoa on the basis I could furl it if too much sail but I recognise that it is pften necessary to reduce sail and that the jib probably beats better into wind so if faced with a choice of one I would suggest a jib.

If the sail is sound and you just need sliders adding, then a sailmaker can easily fit them. No need to buy a new sail - unless the sail is worn out anyway.
